Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
